When it comes to dining out, most customers often overlook the safety measures that need to be put in place to create a safe and healthy environment. However, behind the scenes, restaurant owners and managers have a responsibility to ensure that the necessary fire safety precautions are in place in the event that a fire breaks out. In this post, we will take a look at what restaurant fire safety means and what measures need to be in place to protect staff, customers and property.

Kitchen Suppression Systems

A restaurant kitchen is a hub of activity where creative juices are flowing. However, with this, there are flammable juices flowing too which, when combined with open flames and hot cooking equipment, can be a recipe for disaster.

Kitchen suppression systems are designed to swiftly tackle fires that have broken out in a commercial kitchen area. These sophisticated systems detect high levels of heat, smoke or flames and smother them using the most suitable extinguishant for the type of fire to limit its spread and prevent reignition.

Fire Alarms

Modern fire alarm systems are equipped with sophisticated sensors that can quickly detect the presence of smoke or heat. This is crucial in a restaurant setting, where the sound of conversation and the clatter of dishes can create noise levels that might drown out traditional fire alarms.

Regular testing and maintenance of these fire alarm systems by a professional will ensure they remain highly responsive when required.

Correct Fire Extinguishers

When a fire breaks out in any setting, using the wrong type of extinguisher can significantly worsen the situation. When it comes to a commercial kitchen, a wet chemical fire extinguisher is the most suitable type to have installed in designated areas as it tackles fat and grease fires. Not only is it imperative to have the correct type of fire extinguisher in place, but staff should be fully trained in the correct use of these extinguishers to respond effectively in the event of a fire.

Fire Safety Training

It is an employer’s duty to make sure that restaurant staff are well-versed in fire safety protocols as one weak link can lead to fatal consequences. Fire safety is a legal requirement and should cover:

  • evacuation procedures

  • proper use of fire safety equipment

  • techniques to remain calm in high-stress situations

Regular Inspections and Maintenance

All fire safety equipment requires regular inspections and maintenance to ensure the systems are in top working condition and fully functional. For this, all work must be carried out by an experienced, reputable fire safety company, to ensure regulatory requirements and industry standards are met. This will include routine inspections to identify any issues so they can be addressed swiftly and safely.

Restaurants must adhere to the stringent fire safety regulations in place to safeguard their staff, customers and premises. Failure to do so can result in fines and even closure.
