HSG65, Managing for Health and Safety, is the Health and Safety Executive’s guidance for building a clear framework for managing health and safety at work.
The current edition is built around the Plan, Do, Check, Act model and treats health and safety as part of good management generally, rather than a stand-alone system.
At the centre of HSG65 are these parts:
→ Plan, by setting your policy, identifying risks, and deciding what needs to be done
→ Do, by putting arrangements in place, assigning responsibilities, and providing the right information and training
→ Check, by monitoring performance, reviewing incidents, and looking at whether controls are working
→ Act, by learning from findings and making changes where standards are slipping
It also places strong focus on leadership, worker involvement, and continual improvement.
That matters because a safety system should live in the workplace, not just sit in a folder.
Used properly, HSG65 helps organisations stay organised, spot gaps early, and keep people safer through a cycle of planning, action, review, and improvement.
A simple framework, applied well, can make a very big difference.
